Platt fields is a wonderful peaceful oasis set right in the heart of South Manchester. The parks and gardens cover a massive 17 acres and provides all sorts of recreational activities for the Community - there are sports fields, conservation areas, a playground and a lovely heart-shaped lake with its' own island thus providing a home for many species of wildfowl. As you walk around the park you will see lots of information boards telling you about the park facilities and Features of Interest. Heritage features include Platt Hall which is a lovely red-brick building which dates from the 1760's; here you will find the Manchester Costume gallery. Unfortunately during my visit the gallery was closed for renovation but is due to re-open in March 2010.
In the grounds of the Park, just behind the railings to the rear of the playground you can see an Anglo Saxon Earthwork named Nico Ditch. in AD 1200 the Great Ditch extended over five miles to Ashton Moss, bounding several Townships.
This fascinating park has lots to offer, it's bursting with nature, history and culture - right up my street!
