Manchester Jewish Museum is housed in the former Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue on Cheetham Hill Road, just outside Manchester. The synagogue was built in 1874 and is a fine example of Victorian architecture constructed in a Moorish style. It opened as a museum in 1984 after the local Jewish population moved to other suburbs. The founders were Sephardi Jews, originating in Spain, Portugal and the Mediterranean lands, hence the name and style of the synagogue.
The ground floor has not been altered and has a magnificent circular window and beautiful Ark -- a Torah Scroll is on the Desk which enables the visitor to gain a good impression of services that would have been held there.
Upstairs, in the former ladies gallery, there is a permanent exhibition of Jewish memorabilia with faithful reconstructions of a typical kitchen, a waterproof garment maker's workshop and an office -- nearby Red Bank was the heart of the Manchester Jewish community for many years and the photographs on display bring back those times.
