Over the mortal remains of a local saint, the impressive tomb of Khwaza Khizr was constructed. Khwaza Khizr was the son of Darya Khan Sarwani and flourished during the era of Ibrahim Lodi.
His tomb was constructed during 1522-24 A.D. and was one of the few monuments where along with red sandstone ‘kankar’ blocks have also been used. The tomb stands on a high platform which can be accessed by a flight of steps that lead to a gateway and has square projections at the corners.
At the end of a central passage, two arched openings form the gateway. The front portion of the tomb is made up of arched recesses, lotus medallions and mouldings.
The ceiling of the chamber is made ornate by the use of floral designs that have dull red, green, yellow and blue colors. Above the burial chamber there is a hemispherical dome that rests on an octagonal low drum.
