There are three Ber trees in the premises of Golden temple namely “The Lachi Ber, The Ber Baba Buddha Ji and The Dukh-Bhanjani Ber”. These three Ber trees are the inhabitants of the Temple complex even before the temple was constructed. These trees are the silent witness to the 400 years journey of the temple.
Dukh-Bhanjani Ber:
The Dukh-Bhanhani Ber tree holds a important role in the Golden Temple history and construction. It was mainly due to the unique curing components of the pool water around the Dukh-Bhanjani Ber tree, that Guru Amar Das had recommended Guru Ram Das (his son-in-law and descendant), to develop this place as the Sikh’s religious capital and the center of their devotion. It was in consideration of its capability to remove all diseases and anguish that Guru Ram Das called it Dukh Bhanjani Ber, which means (Dukh - Sorrow, and Bhanjani - Exhausting). The Dukh-Bhanjani Ber situated in the centre of the eastern lath of the Amrit-Sarovar.
Baba Buddha Ji Ber:
Another Ber tree, called as the Ber Baba Buddha Ji is situated on the Sarovar’s northern bank. It is not as famous as the Dukh-Bhanjani Ber, but its role is as equally important. When Baba Buddha Ji was supervising the construction of Amrit Sarovar, this Ber tree extended itself over his head like an umbrella verdant branches for sheltering him from burning summer and roaring clouds. And the Ber tree served Guru s cause in its own way; hence it is worshipped as Ber Baba Buddha Ji.
Lachi Ber:
It is located at the entrance of Golden temple at Darshan Deori on its northern side. When Guru Arjan Dev supervised Amrit Sarovar’s construction, it served as shelter to him, not allowing even an isolated sunray to cut across and disturb the Guru. A local Muslim chief Massa Ranghar occupied the Temple and desecrated this holy tree. Mehtab Singh Mirankotia (a veteran Sikh from Buddha Jauhar in rajasthan) reached to Amritsar to punish Mass Ranghar. Besides giving him stimulation the Lachi Ber gave to his horse protection and shelter to relax, as it was to this Ber that his horse was tied. The Lachi Ber now serves all devotees with the karah Prasad.
