Sakkarbaug Zoological Garden also known as Sakkarbaug Zoo or Junagadh Zoo at Junagadh, Gujarat, India is famous worldwide for providing purebreed Asiatic Lions for the Indian and the international Endangered species captive breeding program for the critically endangered Asiatic Lions. Wild free ranging Asiatic Lions have become extinct all over Asia and are today found only in the nearby Gir Forest .
The Sakkarbaug zoo in Junagadh is the oldest zoo in Gujarat and is home to the famous Gir lions, tigers and leopards. The zoo was set up in 1863 AD by the Nawab, to save the Asiatic lion from extinction and today the zoo is the leading breeding centre for the Asiatic lions with a developed open area of over 500 acres.
