In 1882, the then Royal Indian Marine surveyed the site of Okha. In 1911, survey was undertaken for height alignment of a pier and this was repeated in 1919 for satisfactory positioning of the pier. The Royal Indian Marine resurveyed the harbour in 1922-23. After which the actual construction of the port began. Okha Port started functioning on 25th October 1925 whereas formal opening was done by the Maharaja of Baroda
Shri Sayaji Rao Gaikwad on 14th February, 1926. After which there has been no looking back for the port. And the Port has since then witnessed a rising tempo of activities and at present handles 11.51 million tons of cargo.Dwarka, 22 miles to the South of Okha, and Beyt, just across the harbour waters and approached by Ferry from Okha, are sacred places of Hindu pilgrimage. The climate of Okhamandal is salubrious and bracing. In summer it is particularly pleasant because of the cooling sea breezes. Okha has a fine long sea beach having facilities for boating excursion and fishing and is a suitable place for people who wish to have a quiet retreat near the nature. Two furnished rest houses for accommodation of visitors are available in Indian and European styles.During ancient era, there was a regular fair season weekly cargo-cum-passenger schedule ship service of M/s. Scindia Steam Navigation Company Limited between Okha and Bombay. The Ship called at Okhaevery Friday and sailed for Bombay every Saturday. Okha port with Latitude 220 28’ N and Longitude 690 05’ E, is situated at the mouth of the Gulf of Kutch at the North-West corner of the Saurashtra Peninsula is an all weather port with direct berthing facilities, located off at about 323 nautical miles from Mumbai. The port is endowed with a natural harbour that provides shelter throughout the year. The port is connected to Jamnagar / Porbandar by road and to rest of India by broad gauge railway system. Nearest Airport is Jamnagar and Porbandar.Okha Port presently houses four harbour structures which include a 180 m Sayaji pier, a 145 m DCB pier, Govind Ghat admeasuring 100 m and a Block Wharf measuring 54 m.Apart from the harbor structures, 16 Warehouses admeasuring 24,295 sqm, 2 open plots admeasuring approx. 3, 535 sqm and stacking area of 50,000 sqm along with dry dock and work shop facilities forms the part of present infrastructure at Okha Port. The present capacity of the port is approximately 4.06 million tonnes.
