Kankwari is a picturesque 17th century fortress set atop a solitary hillock rising out of the surrounding wilderness. A steep flight of stairs leads up to the fort where faded wall paintings still vibrate with beauty.

Dara Shikoh the rightful heir to the Mughal throne is said to have been held captive by his brother, the usurper Aurangzab, here in this melancholy ruin overlooking a small lake. About thousands of guards were also housed in the fort to monitor his actions during the life time exile.
