Barton Library is a beautiful two storeyed building, appropriately designed for a road junction. It has two wings and a central tower, constructed in ashlar stone masonary, with Gothic arch windows and a sloping roof with Mangalore tiles. This library is one of the oldest libraries of Gujarat and also houses a museum.

The Barton Library is one of the oldest educational institutions in the region. It has a huge collection of books and magazines. Mahatma Gandhi has also benefited as a reader from this library that stands in the center of the city.
The history of the establishment of the Barton Library is associated with the Chhagan Prasad Desai Library. It was the first initiation towards the establishment of an institute in the Kathiawad region.
The Barton Library at Bhavnagar initially started functioning with a small collection of 5000 books, which were donated by Chhagan Prasad Desai. The collection increased to 15980 during the reign of Maharaja Krishnakumar Sinhji.
The Barton Library was established towards the end of the 19th century and stands in the heartland of Bhavnagar as a center of cultural and historical significance. The repository is one of the oldest libraries of the city, which has earned its repute round in the state of Gujarat.
