Rohtak, India Overview
Rohtak City is a Municipal Corporation in Rohtak district that styles itself as the "Heart of Haryana". It is located 70 km northwest of New Delhi and 250 km south of the state capital Chandigarh at the NH 10. Rohtak is located nearly east side to Bhiwani and 45 km away from it. Rohtak forms a part of National Capital Region. Rohtak is also fast emerging as the industrial city of Haryana.
Rohtak is one of the old cities of India. It lies in the centre of Haryana. It proximity to Delhi gives it national importance.
The city finds its mention in the Mahabharta. There it is referred to as one of the cities conquered by Nakula, one of the Pandava brothers. Then it was called Roheetaka. The inhabitants of this area were called Matmayurkas and the presiding deity of the people was Kartikeyan. There is another mention of this city in the Mahabharta. The armed forces which came to help Duryodhan in the Great War camped near Rohtak. It is said that Karna also conquered this city. The ancient of Rohtak is said to be near the Khokhrakot village.
According to some scholars, the town derives its name from the Roherra tree called Rohitaka in Sanskrit. It is said that before the town came into existence it was the site of a forest of Rohitaka trees and hence its name became City. It the ancient texts, it is mentioned as Roheetakaranya (the forest of Roheetka trees).
However, some scholars believe that the name Rohtak is derived from Rohtashgarh, a name still applied to two ruined. It was named after Raja Rohtash, in whose days the city is said to have been built.
From the records of the Mughal Empire in India, it is evident that when Akbar’s minister Todar Mal, divided North India into administrative circles, Rohtak fell within the Subas of Delhi and Hisar. After the decline of Mughal empire, the Rohtak areas were ruled by differed rulers for short periods, for example, Rajputs, Jats, Sikhs and Marathas. On December 20, 1803, the Rohtak area came under the British rule.
The present Rohtak was formed in1824 as a separate unit. The Distt. Was abolised in A.D. 1841. In 1858, it was passed to the Punjab. In 1884, it was transferred to Delhi division. After partition, it was again made part of Punjab. Then in 1966, when Haryana was created, Rohtak fell in Haryana.
