Located in the old town of Hazira is the mausoleum of Ghaus Mohammed, the 'Afghan Prince turned Sufi Saint' who helped Babur in annexing the Gwalior Fort. Built in the 16th century, this sandstone tomb is an exemplary piece of Mughal architectural adroitness. Built opulently in early Mughal lines, the screens of the monument have been carved using the pierced stone technique. Thus, these fine trellises look like delicate and exquisitely patterned laces. The beauty of the monument is also enhanced by the dappling gardens that surround it.
Ghaus Mohammed's tomb is an attractive sandstone mausoleum of the Afghan Prince Ghous. On the four sides, there are hexagonal towers with a dome in the middle. Lattice work or jhilmili style of Gwalior is found in the maqbara of Ghous.
Ghaus Mohammed was a 15th century Sufi saint. He is an Afghan prince who later became a Sufi. He was the teacher of musician Tansen. He was the advisor of King Babur. The Tomb of Ghaus Mohammed is the best example of Medieval Mugal architecture design. The tomb has a gorgeous look with its mind blowing architectural beauty and stone carvings.
To the east of the town stands the mausoleum of Muhammad Ghaus. It is built in the form of a square with hexagonal towers at its corners surmounted by small domes. The body of the building is enclosed on all sides by carved stone lattices of elaborate and delicate design the whole being crowned by a large dome which was once inlaid with blue glazed tiles. Shaikh Mohammad ghaus, whose body lies within, was a well-known Muslim saint of the sixteenth century.
The Tomb of Ghaus Mohammed rightfully dwarfs the neighbouring tomb of the great composer and singer Tansen in Gwalior. Mohammed was not only a prominent Sufi Shattari exponent and author, he was also the spiritual mentor of Tansen. He died in 1563. The Tomb belongs to the time of Akbar's reign, and was originally covered with blue tiles. It has a number of 'chatri' figures, which feature in a good many structures in Gwalior.
