The Alipore Zoological Gardens is India’s oldest zoological park covering 45 acres. In 1876 it has been opened as a zoo. However, Alipore Zoological Gardens is better known as the home of now expired 250 years old Aldabra Giant Tortoise, Adwaita. The major attractions include the Royal Bengal Tiger, African Lion, Dromedary Camel, Reticulated Giraffe, Indian Elephant, Jaguar, Hippopotamus, Grant’s Zebra, one-horned Rhinoceros, Giant Eland, Zanzibar Ram, Afrian buffalo, Sambar Deer, Hog Deer, Indian Antelope, Indian Gazelle, Domestic Sheep, Wild Yak and birds like Ostrich, Emu, Cassowary, Peacock, Hornbill, Golden Pheasant, Lady Amherst’s Pheasant, Macaw, Lories and Lorikeets and other migratory birds like Saras Crane.
