Rangaswamy Peak and Pillar, Kotagiri, Tamil Nadu India

The Rangaswamy Peak is conical structure that is at a height of about 5855 feet above sea level. The hill on which it is situated is considered extremely sacred and legends have it that Lord Rangaswamy lived here when he left home to be alone. On the rocks of this hill just after the Arakadu village lie two footprints that stand testimony to this story.

This peak is sacred for Nilgiris people, adding holiness to this natural beauty. The hill on which it is situated is considered extremely sacred and legends have it that Lord Rangaswamy lived here when he left home to be alone. On the rocks of this hill just after the Arakadu village lie two footprints that stand for evidence. This place of worship is visited by number of pilgrims. The Rangaswamy Pillar is found on the north-west of the peak. It rises in splendour to a height of about 400 feet as an isolated rock pillar with unclimbable steep sides.

Rangaswamy peak and pillar is a conical peak, which is situated at a height of 5885 feet above. Rangaswamy peak and pillar are one of the most sacred places on the plateau. Rangaswamy peak is located at a distance of near about 12 kms form Kotagiri hill station.

Rangaswamy peak is revered by the Irulas Tribes. This peak is a sacred place for thousands of families in and around the porangadu Semmai i.e. region around Kotagiri town. This place is one of the most sacred hills on the plateau. However, it is being visited by devotes during the month of summer. The deity present here is the Lord Rangaswamy. According to the Hindu Mythology, Lord Rangaswamy used to live at Karamandai in Coimbatore district. However, after a quarreled with his wife, Lord Rangaswamy started living alone at Rangaswamy pillar. However, two-foot prints on the rock below the peak are said to be the proof of this story. These footprints are very near to the Arakadu Village.
