Paradip, India Overview
Paradip is among Odisha’s most evocative destinations. A major seaport of India, it is a land of sun-drenched evergreen forests, spectacular creeks, a huge and enchanting estuary, pristine beach and the marine drive. Located at the meeting point of Mahanadi River and the Bay of Bengal, Paradip, also spelt Paradeep, is one of the major ports of India and the deepest in the country.
One of the oldest existing ports of the world, Paradip is also an important centre for marine fishing and has an integrated fishery harbour. At present, it is the main outlet and inlet of the sea borne trade of the eastern part of India.

Paradip, India History
THE Paradip Port Trust (PPT) created sort of history by posting nearly 46 per cent growth in traffic at 19.9 million tonnes (mt) in 2000-01. The growth rate was not only the highest among all major ports but also substantially higher than the average gro wth of 3.32 per cent registered for the port sector in general. As a result, Paradip port's share of traffic among all major ports increased from 5.01 per cent in 1999-00 to more than seven per cent in 2000-01 and its ranking in terms of total volume of traffic handled jumped to sixth from ninth. This all well known. What perhaps is not known is that the port, according to PPT sources, achieved a total of 35 operational records during the year. These include a record number of 915 ships handled (up 23 per cent from 741 in the previous year); a record quantity of 12.08 mt (up 44 per cent from 8.39 mt in the previous year) handled by the port railways; the highest daily throughput record of 100,6 53 tonnes achieved on January 6 (the previous record being 90,464 tonnes on August 22,2000), and the highest monthly throughput of 1.91 mt achieved in December 2000 (the previous record being 1.71 mt in October 2000).Capping it all, the 30-year-old iron ore plant achieved a throughput of 4.13 mt, which is not only an all-time high but also more than its rated capacity of four mt and much more than the previous record of 3.21 mt.
