Mayapur, India Overview
Mayapur is the birth place of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who is regarded as a special incarnation of Lord Radha and Krishna. It is considered as one of the important holy places of Hinduis specially to the followers of Gaudiya Vaishnavism. According to them Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is no different from Lord Krishna and it is the place of his childhood past times, so it is non different from the importance of Vrindavana. Over million of pilgrims comes to visit this place every year. The headquarter of The International Society for Krishna Consciousness(ISKCON) is located here. The main attraction of Mayapur is now centered to the visiting of the Temple site of Chandraodaya Mandir erected by ISKCON over a period of 14 years at the cost of Rs. 10 crore.
Mayapur is located on the banks of the Ganges river, at the point of its confluence with the Jalangi, near Navadvip, West Bengal, India, 130 km north of Kolkata (Calcutta). The headquarters of ISKCON are situated in Mayapur and it is considered a holy place by a number of other traditions within Hinduism, but is of special significance to followers of Gaudiya Vaishnavism as the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, regarded as a special incarnation of Krishna in the mood of Radha. It is visited by over a million pilgrims annually.
