It is the major attraction of the city and is located south of St. Thomas Church at a distance of 4 km from Ghazipur railway station, near old Cantonment. Lord Charles Cornwallis was appointed Governor General of India in 1805, but he accidently died on 5th Oct. of the same year, in Ghazipur city. He is buried here. British Government erected a large tomb in his memory in the city. The monument structure is heavy & stones used to construct it were brought from England. It has a domed roof supported by twelve Doric Columns. The floor is built of grey marble at a height of about 4 mts. from the ground. In the centre, there is a cenotaph of white marble medallion bust of Cornwallis on the southern side. The monument is well maintained by the Ministry of Tourism. There is a large gathering here every year to celebrate the New Year.
