Pratapgarh, India Overview
Pratapgarh is a town located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. This town is located in the Pratapgarh district. The town is a popular tourist destination, as the entire region has good historical significance. The region was first under the control of King Pratap Singh, who built a major fort in the town naming it Pratapgarh. The district has since grown in size, with an administrative headquarters in Bela.
There are many places that you can visit during your trip to Pratapgarh. Pratapgarh is basically famous for a huge Buddhist monastery that is present in the region, also called as Kot. This Buddhist monastery was once prevalent and is now in ruins, and this is a major tourist attraction here.
There are many temples and places of religious interest in Pratapgarh too. You can visit the Bela Bhawani temple during your trip to Pratapgarh, which is a pilgrim destination that is packed during the monsoon season as this is the festive season. This temple is located in the banks of the Sai River.

Pratapgarh, India History
The district is named after its headquarters town Bela Pratapgarh, commonly known as Pratapgarh. Raja Ajit Pratap Singh, a local raja between 1628–1682, located his headquarters at Rampur near the old town of Aror. There he built a garh (fort) and called it Pratapgarh after himself. Subsequently, the area around the fort became known as Pratapgarh. When the district was constituted in 1858, its headquarters was established at Bela, which came to be known as Bela Pratapgarh, the name Bela presumably being derived from the temple of Bela Bhawani on the bank of river Sai. It is popularly known as "Bela Mai" – meaning mother goddess Bela.
