Sarnath, India Overview
Sarnath is located about 10 km from the holy city of Varanasi. After the Buddha accomplished enlightenment in BodhGaya, he came to Sarnath and delivered his first lecture. It thus became one of the holiest places to the Buddhist world and become a centre attraction for the visitors. It is a major buddhist pilgimage destination which also celebrates Mantra, ‘Buddham Sharanam Gachhami’, that owes its origin to Sarnath.
The Emperor Ashoka who distributed the message of Lord Buddha's based on love and compassion throughout his vast empire. Between the 3rd century BC and the 11th century AD, there are several Buddhist structures that were raised at Sarnath. The famous Ashoka pillar of Sarnath is the National emblem of India.
Sarnath town is quite peaceful and green by nature or look. There are so many main attractions that are Asoka's pillar, the ruins of the Mulagandhakuti and the huge second century old Dharma Stupa, also known as Dhamekha Stupa, built by the Emperor Ashoka. Moreover, there are a number of ancient temples to visit which is constructed in recent times such as Thai temples, the Burmese, Korean and Chinese temples. Besides these, Tibetan temples and a Japanese temple are the major tourist attractions in Sarnath that has a definite Buddhist atmosphere.
