The temple of Kapil Muni is situated on the Sagar Island of Sagardwip and is dedicated to Kapil Muni, one of the sages of Hindu legend. Most of the temples of Sagardwip were destroyed by a tornado, which also included the Kapil Muni Temple of Sagar Island. However, in 1961, the chief minister of Bengal, Shri B.C.Roy made efforts to set up this temple again, which was the fourth attempt to do so. This construction got completed in the year 1973. This temple is most visited on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, that falls every year in mid-January. The devotees, who come to this temple on this occasion, take a holy dip at the confluence of the Bay of Bengal and River Ganga. A dip at this confluence is said to wash away one’s sins and bless one with prosperity. On this occasion, there is also a ‘Gangasagar Mela’ held in the place, which is said to be the largest fair in West Bengal.
