Its mean "Har stands for Hari, or Lord Krishna, the blue-god, and Dun means valley", lies in the westernmost Himalayas of Garhwal, sharing its boundary with eastern Himachal Pradesh, Har Ki Dun, situated in the upper catchments of river Tons, at an elevation of 3566 meters is surrounded by glittering peaks and dense forests. It is a believed that the Pandavas of the epic Mahabharata ascended to heaven through Swargarohini (in Hindi, swarg means heaven, and arohini is derived from the word arohan, which means to climb). Har Ki Dun Mountain Trekking will take you to the source of the Karmanasha stream which meets the Obragaad stream below a village named Sankri or Saur, to form the supine river which unites with the Rupin River flowing from Himachal Pradesh, at Netwar, to become the Tons River – a major tributary of the Yamuna River. The forests are rich in wild life and are a veritable paradise for bird-watchers and nature lovers and is one of the most fascinating and lesser exploited area of Garhwal Himalayas.
It is believed that Pandavas made their journey to Swarg (Heaven) through this way and Swargarohini Peak was the gate to heaven. The attachment of the place with Mahabharata also reflects in the people’s religious beliefs. The locals here and in the nearby areas, are followers of the Pandavas and Kauravas (In Mori).
