Bhimtal, India Overview
Bhimtal which is a small town is situated merely 22 kilometres away from the well known hill resort, Nainital, Uttaranchal in India. Bhimtal has been named after Bhim, who is one of the brothers of Pandava from the great epic, Mahabharata.
Bhimtal is one of the most known and visited hill stations basically due to its lake resort. Bhimtal is a town and a nagar panchayat in Nainital district in the state of Uttarakhand, India, situated at an altitude of 1370 meters above sea level and is about 22 kilometers from Nainital. The major attraction in Bhimtal is the Bhimtal Lake, which has an island at its centre. Besides tourism, Bhimtal has also now become a mini district headquarters since most of the district administration offices have been shifted to the newly constructed Vikas Bhawan, the building complex for district administrative offices.
Bhimtal is a small town 22 Kms from Nainital and is known as a lake resort. It was named after one of the Pandav brothers called Bhim and is the largest lake in the district of Nainital. Close enough to drive – six hours from Delhi, but far from being overrun by the holidaying hordes that cluster in Nainital, Bhimtal is a luxury taste of tranquility. Here the natural beauty is immense and peace is in abundance. It is located at an altitude of 1371 mts above sea level amongst the Kumaon hills and the Bhimtal lake is 1701 mts by 265 mts.
The main attraction in Bhimtal is its Lake and its surroundings. It the largest lake of the region and in the middle of the Lake there is an island where one can take a boat ride and have some nice local cuisine. Island provides panoramic view of Bhimtal lake and its surrounding hills. Travelers can also explore the surrounding forest on foot. You will also find a large Victorian dam on one side of the lake and flower gardens on the other. There is also a Folk Culture Museum in Bhimtal but it’s a private institution and possess some good collection of wooden artifacts, information on traditional rites, rituals and items of archeological importance. Bhimtal is also famous for its various fruit based products like sauces, squashes, jams, etc.
Depending on the season one can take the opportunity to indulge in soft adventure activities like rock climbing, rappelling, para-gliding, trekking, etc. All these activities are performed under guidance of professional / licensed people who will ensure both safety and fun.
There are various other attractive places near Bhimtal like Sattal, Nainital, Naukuchiatal, Kausani, Mukteshwar, Ranikhet and Dhanchuli and temple of Bageshwar & Jageshwar where one can take day trips or stay overnight. All places are well connected with smooth road network and are a drive worth it.

The site of dam features Bhimeshwar Temple that dates back to 17th century. It is one of the main reasons to visit Bhimtal as no other place can deliver such serine beauty.
The ravines which are embellished with the wild raspberry and dog rose and the beautiful dappled paths are some great attractions which have been attracting thousands of tourists to this place from all over the world.
