Five-faced Hanuman Temple, about 2 kms from the main temple, is the temple of Hanuman drawn with senthooram. The temple has idols of Lord Ram, Sita and Hanuman brought from Dhanushkodi during the 1964 cyclone. The temple also holds the floating stone that was used to build the Sethu Bandanam or the bridge between India and Lanka.
The Five-Faced Hanuman Temple is perhaps the most popular temple in Rameshwaram after the Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple. The idols of Lord Rama, his consort Sita and Hanuman have been established in the temple. These idols were brought from Dhanushkodi to this temple during the 1964 cyclone that destroyed much of Dhanushkodi village. Interestingly, it is believed that their souls are inside their idols. This is one reason the temple is frequently visited by devotees from all over the country.
Another interesting feature of the temple is the floating stone place right outside the temple. This stone is believed to be a part of the bridg, which was built by Hanuman and his monkey army in order to reach Lanka to rescue Sita from the clutches of Ravana. Five faceted Hanuman temple is the most renowned temple in Rameshwar. It has mythological evidence where Hanuman showed his profile with five faces. He is believed to be adorned with senthooram at this particular place. When hanuman showed revealed his five faceted profiles. The statues of all Rama, Laxman, Sita and Hanuman are placed in the temple and all have been sacredly worshiped as if they have lives in them. The actual soul of the Gods is supposed to have been put into the idols and the temple indeed has great historical evidence. There is floating stone outside the temple which was used to create the bridge on the sea as prescribed by our Indian mythology. Legend has it that it was at this place that Hanuman showed all of his five faces or forms. He was also decorated with senthooram or vermilion at this place by Lord Rama.
