Śrī Subramanya Swami Templeis situated on Old Mahabalipuram Road in Sholinganallur, 13 kms south of Adyar (Chennai) adjoining a cool green environment spread over an area of 100 acres of farmland with scenic beauty and aesthetic value that has already attracted people from far and wide.
The temple has been blessed by the participation of the revered Śrī Sankaracharyas of Kanchi Mutt and other Hindu religious figures of various mutts of Tamil Nadu. The pradhana devata of the temple is Śrī Valli Devasena Samedha Subramanya Swami. This temple is one among the well known Murugan temples. Sri Dandayuthpani, Malaikkolundu amman, Malaikkolundu Sivan, Sri Natarajar and Sri Kulandhai Velayudha swami are installed in this temple which was built by the Chera kings in the 13th century. The Rajagopuram (temple tower) is magnificent. The deity circumambulates the temple everyday in His Golden chariot. It is believed that if devotees circumambulate the hill temple (giri valam) they will be healed from any kind of suffering. Archana and Abhishekam are the types of pujas performed here. The Brahmotsavam is celebrated in March - April every year. The other festivals are Karthigai, Kandha sashty, Thirukkarthigai, Panguni uthiram and Thaipoosam.
The Subramanya or the Karthikeya temple is located at a distance of 65 kms from Kodaikanal and is popularly known as Palani temple. It is dedicated to Lord Subramanian or Dhandayuthapani. The word Dhandayuthapani means having a stick in the hand as a weapon. It is one of the famous temples in South India and is located at an altitude of 135 meters. Pilgrims can climb the 659 steps or can use the winch facility to reach the sanctum sanctorum. Tai Pusam in January is one of the major festivals of this temple. The Panguni Uttaram is another festival conducted in April which draws many people from all over India and across the globe as well.
