The Nameri National Park is located in the Sonitpur district of Assam at a distance of 21 kms from Bhalukpong in Arunachal Pradesh. The park was initially set up as a sanctuary in 1985 with an area of 137 sq km, before another 75 sq km was added to the total area in 1998. Spread over an area of 200 sq km, Nameri National Park forms the core area of Nameri Tiger Reserve, which itself is spread over 344sq km.
Nameri National Park is the third national park, as well as the second tiger reserve of Assam. It comprises primarily of deciduous forests. The park is home to mammals like the elephant, barking deer, hog deer, tiger, leopard, sambar, wild boar, gaur, ferret badger, slow loris and gaplangur, as well as countless species of birds including the white-throated fantails, white-winged wood duck, palla’s fishing eagle, Lesser Adjutant stork, greater spotted eagle, rufous necked hornbill, ibisbill, geat pied Indian hornbill, wreathed hornbill, ruddy kingfisher and sultan tit.
The Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary lies adjacent to Nameri National Park at its north-eastern point. The river Jia Bhoroli and its tributaries such as Nameri, Dikorai, Diji, Dinai, Doigurung and Khari, flow through the park. The rainy season sees the formation of jheels throughout the area.
