Kempty Falls are encircled by high mountain cliffs and are located at an altitude of about 4500 feet above the sea level. The Kempty Falls offer a remarkable view as the water falls from a great height and then divides into five streams.
Situated on the Mussoorie-Dehradun Highway, Kempty Falls, which attracts tourists from all over the country, was developed as a picnic spot by the British officer John Mekinan somewhere around 1835. Usually crowded with tourists, Kempty Falls are a perennial waterfall that makes for an interesting picnic spot and it is said that the visit to these alluring waterfall is incomplete without taking a bath under them.
If you are interested in fishing you can head to the sacred River Yamuna, which is just 12kms from the Kempty Falls. Fishing here is very popular; however, permits are to be taken from Divisional Forest Officer, Mussoorie, before fishing at Kempty Falls. An ideal place to relax and unwind the area around the Kempty Falls has various shops that sell artefacts and souvenirs. Some of the noteworthy shops are the ones that are selling Tibetan souvenirs, which have been made by the residents of Happy Valley. This apart there are several food and game stalls around the area.
The best time to visit Kempty Falls is between the summer months of March and June as the weather is pleasant enough for outdoor activities. It is advisable to carry an extra set of clothing. Carry an extra set of clothing if you intend taking a dip.
Kempty Falls are one of the most beautiful water falls in not only Uttarakhand, rather the whole of India. Kempty Falls was developed as a picnic spot by the British officer John Mekinan, around 1835. It is believed that, the name ‘Kempty’ is a derivation of the ‘Camp-Tea’, the tea parties that the British used to organize here. Situated on the hilly pathway of Uttarakhand, Kempty Falls are strikingly beautiful. They prove to be the perfect place for picnic or for spending a couple of hours listening to the sound of the water-falls, amidst lush green vegetation. Also it is better to head out from the area for Mussoorie before sunset as it is a difficult drive on a narrow winding road.
