The origin of Hariharnath Temple at Sonepur is shrouded in mystery. A large section of people believe that the temple was built by Lord Rama on his way to Janakpur to win Sita. This temple does not have much architecture.
There is a single square chamber constituting of the cella, with a simple, ordinary roof, rising to a point, and with a narrow porch in front. These are the components of simplest form of temple. This temple has been referred during the Subedarship of Raja Man Singh who is said to have done some repair work. The present Hariharnath temple was built by Raja Ram Narain, a noted figure of Bihar during the later Mughal period.
Recently the temple has been recently reconstructed by the Birla group. Hariharnath Mahadeo is the principle place of worship here but several smaller temples also receive the offerings of pilgrims. Among these are the Kali Asthan and the Panch Devata Mandir.
