Chail Wildlife Sanctuary, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh India

Chail Wildlife Sanctuary is located at the foothills of Indian Himalayan, and it has covered an area of more than 110 sq. kms. According to a survey in 1979, Chail Sanctuary was identified and declared as a protected area. Chir Pheasant Breeding Farm is being considered one of the main attractions for the tourists in the list of Chail tourism. The Chir Breeding farm and rehabilitation programme has been launched in 1988. In Chail, the forests are mainly dense covered with Oak and Pine trees apart from other floral growth.

Chail Wildlife Sanctuary originally served as a hunting reserve for the kings of Patiala, which was later declared as a wildlife sanctuary by the government in 1976. Situated on the top of a mountain and spread over an area of 110 sq km, this sanctuary has deep forests all around cover with pines, shrubs, oak trees, and grasslands.

This sanctuary is home to numerous animal species like goral, rhesus macaque, the Indian muntjac, leopard and crested porcupine. Further, panther, wild boar, sambar, the European red deer, the Himalayan black bear, common langur, and black-napped hare are also found here. Diverse species of birds including the cheer pheasant and the kalij pheasant can also be witnessed at the Chail Wildlife Sanctuary. There are many sighting posts commonly known as machans that offer a bird's eye view of the sanctuary.

Chail Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a variety of fauna and flora. Some of the most popular animal species of the park includes European red deer, wild boar, goral, spotted deer, sambar, common langur, Himalayan black bear, flying squirrel, Indian porcupine, etc. The European red deer was introduced in the park by the then Maharaja of Patiala Bhupinder Singh, almost hundred years ago.

The park is also home to a variety of birds. Chir pheasant and khalij pheasant are the most popular birds that can be sighted in the sanctuary. Golden eagle and grey headed flycatcher flying in the sky offer a majestic sight.

The sanctuary is also home to a wide range of flora. One can find a large number of pine and oak trees in the Chail Wildlife Sanctuary. The slopes of the sanctuary have a rich cover of lush green grassland.
