Bhitarkanika National Park has always been a place of interest for tourists. The word ‘bhitar’ means interior and ‘kanika’ means extraordinarily beautiful. As the name suggests, the coastal area, rivers, creeks, wetland, mud flats actually make an extraordinary landscape, perfect for camping and picnic. It comprises the second largest mangrove ecosystem with a total of 55 varieties of mangroves. The exquisite flora comprises teak and bamboo trees amongst others. The variety of salt resistant flora and fauna are a treat to watch.
Khola and Gupti are the two main entry points for exploring Bhitarkanika National Park. You can enjoy boating and have fun in motorboats along with availing the beautiful site of wild animals, plants and shrubs. Over 215 species of birds can be seen flocking in the park. Around eight species of the lovely kingfisher can be seen along with Asian Open Bill, Cormorants, Darters and Woodpeckers.
A huge number of turtles can be seen on the coast of Bay of Bengal and Gahirmatha Beach. The sanctuary is also a breeding location for the giant crocodiles. A number of reptiles including the awe inspiring pythons, monitor lizards and cobras can also be seen. Hyena, Fishing Cat, Jungle Cat, Smooth Coated Otter, Civet, Indian Porcupine, Wild Boar, and Spotted Deer are some of the wild animals residing in the park. Photography is allowed here, but you will have to pay extra charges for the same.
