Banasura Sagar Dam, Wayanad, Kerala India

Banasura Sagar Dam situated at twenty one kilometer from Wayanad Kalpetta is located in the Western Ghats area. It is the second largest earthen dam in whole of Asia and is an excellent trekking spot for Wayanad tourists. Banasura Sagar Dam is situated 21 km from the town of Kalpetta and is built on the tributary of the Kabini River. The dam was built in accordance with the Banasurasgar Project that was begun in 1979. The project was mainly implanted to supply regular water to the regions that experienced drought-like conditions during summer months. The Banasura dam has the distincton of being the largest earth dam built in India and the second largest in Asia. The dam has been built very strong using stones and boulders.

Banasura Sagar dam is located near Padinjarathara in Wayanad district. It is the largest earth dam in India. It is also the second largest dam in Asia and lies on the tributary of the river Kabini. This dam is a part of the Indian Bansurasagar Project that was started in the year 1979 with the aim of supporting the Kakkayam Hydro electric project in order to provide water to those areas where there is scarcity. At present this project is under execution.

There are many small islands that are formed here due to the reservoir. As this dam is situated between the hills, it provides a beautiful picturesque. The dam extends to a very large area and the water here is very clear. This is an important tourist destination. It is an ideal picnic spot which gives a feeling of freshness to the visitors. Several tourist amenities are available here.

Banasura Sagar dam is built across the tributary Karamanthodu of the calm and beautiful river Kabani. The reservoir is spread over a group of small, green islands. Banasura Sagar Dam, which stores the Karamanathodu tributary, is a part of the Indian Banasura Sagar Project comprising dam and a canal project initiated in the year 1979.  The objective of the Banasura Sagar project is to support the Kakkayam Hydro electric power project. This project aims at satisfying the demand for irrigation and drinking water in the seasonally dry water scarcity region.
