Ahar, India Overview
The Ahar culture, also known as the Banas culture is a Chalcolithic archaeological culture of southeastern Rajasthan state in India, lasting from c. 3000 to 1500 BCE, contemporary and adjacent to the Indus Valley Civilization. Situated along the Banas and Berach Rivers, the Ahar-Banas people were exploiting the copper ores of the Aravalli Range to make axes and other artefacts. They were sustained on a number of crops, including wheat and barley.Ahar region was found by Asaditya about 4000 years. During 1075 AD, Malwa ruler Vikramaditya VI lived in Ahar region before he made Ujjain as the capital of Malwa kingdom. This region was called as Anandpur during the period of Vikramaditya VI. Later on Guhilots took over Anandpur and renamed it as Aharias. Eventually Aharias became a part of Mewar Kingdom and came to be known as Ahar.

Ahar, India History
A new settlement was established here by Rawal Allat of Mewar in 950 AD. Ahar is an older civilization than the Harappa (Mohenjo-Daro) civilization which is now a part of Pakistan. Many artifacts dating back to 2000 BC were discovered by the Archeologists at Ahar including the few old coins found by Colonel James Tod of British regime. These coins were known as Gadhiya paisa, ass copper coins or Indo-Sassanian coins. One side of the coin printed with Gandharvasen’s head (ass head- Gandharvasen was punished by Indra for offending him) who was the brother of Vikramaditya. These coins and artifacts were collected and placed in Archaeological museum.A Shiva temple is located on the banks of an artificial reservoir called Gangodbhava Kund. Gangodbhava Kund is an artificial reservoir believed to be sourcing water from the holy Ganges River.
Ahar (Ayad) River flows from northwest to southeast in Ahar region through the eastern town of Udaipur. It is a tributary of Berach River. This river is connected to almost every lake and river of Udaipur including Pichola, Bada Madar, Chhota Madar, Bedla River, Govardhan Sagar, Nela Taalab, Roopsagar, Fateh Sagar and Swaroop Sagar. Ayad River is known as the neglected Ganga of the Rajasthan. Ahar River has great historical importance, however unfortunately, now it is serving as the drainage body of the city filled with garbage.
Before 10th century the Ahar region was ruled by Malwa rulers. After 10th century Ahar went into the hands of Mewar dynasty.Ahar is famous as an archaeological site which is very useful for researchers in the field of archeology. Ahar is very popular for an ancient archaeological museum.
