Vasai Fort known as Bassein or Baçaim is a historical village north of Mumbai in the Maharashtra state of India. Now, it is a part of the Vasai-Virar city.
The Portuguese built a fort in Vasai, which strengthened their naval superiority over the Arabian Sea. In the 18th century, the fort was taken over by the Maratha army under Peshwa Baji Rao's brother Chimaji Appa, and fell in 1739 after a three-year-long campaign. The British then took over the territory from the Marathas.
Vasai East is emerging as a new industrial hub outside Mumbai, specially for pharmaceutical machinery and specialized engineering units.
