Thattekad Sanctuary is located in the Kothamangalam Taluk of Ernakulam district on the northern bank of the Periyar River. The sanctuary was notified in 1983 based on a recommendation made by Dr. Salim Ali many years previously. It is a home to a microcosm of India's bird population with about 500 winged species. The renowned ornithologist, Dr. Salim Ali designed the Thattekad Bird sanctuary. This Bird Sanctuary is spread over an area of 25 sq. km. covered with deciduous forests and plantation of rosewood, teak etc. Rare birds like the Crimson-Throated Barbet, Bee-eater, Sunbird, Shrike, Black winged Kite, and the Night Heron are also commonly sighted here.Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is a rare haven in Kerala, which offers picturesque landscapes, and is a nature lover's paradise.

Years ago, the place where the temple situated was thick forest. There were wild animals also. At that time a devotee T.G Vidyasagar, Mulankuzhy, understood that, a temple should be necessary for the Hindus for their adoration. And he decided to spend money for that by himself. Then he gave the responsibilities of the work to one of his labour and T.G Vidyasagar went to Kalady.
While the worker was doing the stone works, a serpent came out from these and the worker ran, reached the nearest road. The villagers asked about the matter. The worker shows the place to the villagers. For their surprise, they saw a wonderful glazing stone, without any mud, lying there.Then the villagers called a doctor of this village, 'Surendran'. He took a bath in the Periyar and lifted the stone (Today's Sivalinga) and placed it there, where the old temple was situated. This was informed to T.G. Vidyasagar. Some devotees and T. G. Vidyasagar visited the astrologer, Aroor Sreedharapanikar. From that astrologer they understood that, this stone is an ancient 'Sivalinga', and if they keep the precious stone, it will give all the Boom and prosperity to this life.It will be a magnificence to them, According to this, they made the Kshethra. Years passed and the Temple was renewed. But the idol was again the same. Atlas that the investiture of Mahadeva Temple also done.
