Dispur, India Overview
Dispur is located in the state of Assam and it is the capital of the state. The place is located on the outskirts of the city of Guwahati. However the place still remains in the shadow of its big neighbor, Guwahati. The ancient site of Jatia is located near the town and this is worth visiting while travelling to the town of Dispur. One can also travel to Guwahati during the stay and there are many interesting places to see here.
The Basistha Ashram is located near the town of Dispur and this is also a good place to visit. Near the ashram one can see a waterfall and there is a trekking trail that is located here as well. There is a temple that is located here and is worth visiting. A cultural museum called the Shankardev Kalakshetra is situated nearby and this houses an art gallery as well. One can witness cultural programs and traditional Assamese programs in the museum at various parts of the year. Visitors can get a feel of traditional Assamese culture in the museum and literally soak in the local culture. The Garbhanga Reserve is located near the town and it is home to many elephants and this is also worth visiting.

Dispur was made the Capital of Assam State in 1973. Prior to 1973 Shillong was the Capital of the undivided Assam. In 1972 when a separate State of India - the Meghalaya State was carved out of Assam State, Shillong was made the capital of Meghalaya and Dispur was made capital of Assam.The Dispur area along with the Guwahati area was ruled by major Northeastern Kingdoms from the ancient days - the Varman Dynasty (350-650 AD); the Pala Dynasty (750-1174) AD; Kingdoms of Kamata (13th Century); Koch Hajo (the eastern wing of the Kamata Kingdom which currently lies in North Guwahati) and Ahom Kingdom (1228-1826, medieval Kingdom of the Brahmaputra Valley in Assam); the Mughal Empire during the 1600s; the Burmese Kingdom in the 1600s and finally the British Empire ruled till Indian Independence in 1947.Apart from containing the Assam State Government Secretariat, Dispur is popular for the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre - which is said to be the busiest tea trading centre in the world - trading the largest volume of tea in the world.
