Devprayag is situated at an elevation of about 475 mts above sea level, and lies right at the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi River. Although Devprayag is situated in the Tehri Garhwal district, some parts of it also lie in Pauri Garhwal district. Devprayag is the last prayag (confluence) of the river Alaknanda, following which the confluence of this river and the river Bhagirathi is known as Ganga. Devprayag is situated on the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway.
The town is the seat of the pundits of Badrinath Dham, and is believed to be one of utmost sanctity amongst Hindus, as the divine Ganga River assumes its real self from here. The town lends its name from Dev Sharma, believed to have led an asceticlife, besides having been blessed by the vision of god. Known for its tranquillity and its profound beauty, the town is also believed to have served as a place of penance for both Lord Rama and King Dushratha. Also renowned is anarchic Raghunathji Temple built above the confluence with gigantic rocks, believed to be more than ten thousand years old.
The construction of the town was devastated by an earthquake of 1803, following which it was repaired. The confluence has Brahma Kund on Bhagirathi River and Vashisht Kund on Alaknanda River. Also of note is a place called Baitalshila, a bath in which is supposed to cure leprosy.
