Dandeli city is situated on the banks of River Kali in Uttara Kannda District (border of Goa and Karnataka) and it is located at a distance of 480 Km from Bangalore. It is believed that the city is named as "Dandeli" after Dandelappa, a loyal servant of the Mirashi landlords who lost his life because of his loyalty.
The calm and peaceful Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over 834.16 sq. km and rewarded as the second largest wildlife sanctuary in Karnataka. Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary is neighboring with the Mahaveer sanctuary in Goa. The altitude of Dandeli varies from 100 m to 970 m; the highest point is the Hegada Temba.
Dandeli is also a perfect place for white water rafting. Dandeli has become one of the important tourist destinations of Karnataka and attracts many local and foreign tourists.

Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary Experience all the sights and sounds of the lush forests of Dandeli with a wildlife safari. The forest here is a mix of deciduous and evergreen trees including bamboo and teak plantations. The many fruit bearing trees provide food for the 196 species of birds found here.
The sanctuary offers you the rare glimpse of the Black panther, sambhar, bison, Malabar giant squirrel, elephant, tiger, leopard, gaur, flying squirrel, mouse deer etc.
Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over 834.16 Sq.km and is reputed as the largest sanctuary in Karnataka. The wildlife sanctuary is also counted amongst the most attractive tourist spots in Karnataka. Numerous tourists from Karnataka and all over the india come and visit the sanctuaries every year to witness the wildlife while having jungle safari, or from a boat. It is quite an adventurous experience for the tourists, as the thrill that they have while spotting herds of wild elephants, deer and predators catching their prey in their natural habitat is much more exciting than watching a wildlife documentary on television. Tourists are allowed to visit the Dandeli National Park only after seeking permission from the Chief Wild Life Warden, Forest Department. The dense Dandeli jungle(Forest) has become the basis for procreation for a number of varieties of fish and insects, which form the base of the food chain. Several bird species including both resident and migratory types can be found in this sanctuary. The migratory birds from different parts of the world visit the place. The favorable climatic conditions of the country support the diversity of Dandeli flora and fauna.
