Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple, Alappuzha (Alleppey), Kerala India

Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple is one of the prominent temples of Kerala state. The temple is one of the five temples established by Parashurama. The temple has a history of about 1200 years. The temple is located at a distance of 8 km from Kayamkulam at Chettikulangara on Kayamkulam-Mavelikara road in Mavelikkara taluk of Alappuzha district.

The Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple 13 Karas (territories). The temple is at the centre of the oldest four Karas-Erezha South, Erezha North, Kaitha South and Kaitha North and the rest of the Karas Kannamangalam South, Kannamangalam North, Pela, Kadavoor, Anjilipra, Mattam North, Mattam South, Menampally and Nadakkavu surround this temple.

There are numerous sub-deities adjacent to the temple, and a number of Prathishtas have been either revamped or added in respect to the Deva Prashnam (divine question) by proficient astrologers in recent times. The main Sub-deities of the temple are Yakshini, Ganapathi, Nagaraja, Balakan, Muhurthi, Naga Yakshi, Thevara Moorthy, Kannamballi bhagavathi, Rekshas (a fierce supernatural creature who feeds on humans) and Vallyachan. You can also find a small temple for Moolasthanam (primary abode).

The major distinctive aspect of this temple is the massive oil lamp called Kathuvilakku (made from granite) that accommodates over a thousand wicks and is the biggest in India.

Chettikulangara Bhagavathy Temple is the next largest temple after Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple, when it comes in terms of income under the control of Travancore Devaswom Board. A major part of Nellu presented for the Bhagavathi is also utilized in making Appam as well as Aravana prasadams at Sabarimala. The earnings belonging to the temple is also useful to manage the everyday rituals as well as Poojas at a number of temples under the Travancore Devaswom Board.
