Tonk, India History
Tonk city- the capital of the Tonk state is treasuring so many old social, cultural, political and professional values in its history. Ram Singh- a servant of Raja Tenon Pal Tanwar (the brother of Raja of Delhi) populated it beneath the hill of Rasia and named it Tonkra. Sometimes it had been ruled over by the Chauhan dynasty, Solanki dynasty and Rajputs respectively and sometimes by Mughal Emperors as Akbar, Jahangir, Shahjahan, Aurangzeb etc. Once the army of Alauddin Khilji and sometime the troops of Malhar Rao Holkar happened to pass by this town. The books of history even today contain the thousand years old historical facts of this place. Bhola Nath Brahman named it Tonk from Tonkra in 1700 Vikrami/1643 A.D. who belonged to the Gorh caste. Since then this place is famous with the name of Tonk. Some places of Tonk are the symbolic memories of that period as:- Bhoom Garh(Amir Garh), Rasia Ki Tekri, Satal Dev Ka Talab "Satolav" Surjan Ji Ka Surajpura (Sakhna), Manak Ji (Amil) Ka Manak Chowk, Talab Manak Rao (Talab Astal), Mohna Mansur Ka Mazar etc. this city, after being the territory of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, Madho Singh, Prithivi Singh, Jaswant Rao Holkar, Kashi Rao Holkar, Pir Ji Sahib, Khande Rao, came in the possession of Nawab Amir Khan Bahadur in Sammat 1863 Vikrami (1806 A.D.). After eleven years it was recognised a powerful state by the East India Company in 1817 on behalf of a settlement and a treaty between Nawab Amir Khan and East India Company. Then this state was ruled over by seven (Muslim) Nawabs respectively. Ultimately after the independence of India in 1948 it was merged in Rajasthan.
