Regional Museum of Natural History (RMNH), Mysore, is the Southern Regional Office of the National Museum of Natural History, New Delhi, a subordinate office of the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India. It is a non-formal environmental education centre aimed to create conservation awareness among the public through exhibit galleries and by various educational activities. The Regional Museum of Natural History at Mysore, was inaugurated on 20 May 1995. It was undertaken by the government of India, ministry of environment and forests. The museum is located on the banks of Karanji Lake, with the Chamundi Hills visible in the background. It is now a landmark in the city. The museum exhibits plants, animals and geology of the southern region of India. The galleries emphasize the conservation of nature and natural resources while depicting ecological interrelationship among plants and animals. Visually challenged students can feel the exhibits of animals on the premises. The museum provides an extracurricular activity for schools and promotes environmental awareness.
The Museum provides unique opportunity to explore the biodiversity of Southern India as well as the intricate nature’s network around us. The exhibits in the Museum are made up of judicious mix of specimens, models, translites and audiovisual aids. In addition to the permanent galleries, there are also a temporary exhibition area, a Discovery Centre, and a Garden for the Disabled.
At present, the Museum has two galleries dealing with ‘Biological Diversity’ and ‘Life through the Ages’. Future galleries will be based on themes such as ‘Ecology’, ‘Conservation’ etc.
The Regional Museum of Natural History imparts knowledge about the flora and fauna as well as geological wealth of South India. This museum gives its visitors an opportunity to understand the ecological interrelationship among plants and animals and also helps to create environmental awareness among people.
