This is a three storey is famous for its entrance which is surrounded by balcony. 300 years back Bajirao Peshwas ( II ) built this place. The carved woodwork of the balcony which surrounds the entrance of this building is the example of the fine work of ancient Peshwa Art. The wood used is pure processed Saag. It is 78 feet wide and 66 meters long. After Peshwas this place was used as a jail. Pune Municipal Corporation is soon changing this place as museum. It is a 3 floor building in the heart of the city on Bajirao road, next to Laxmi road the huge market for clothing. About 1 lacks of Rupees were spent to built this building at that time. The entire construction is of bricks.
Vishrambaag Wada, a fine mansion situated at central Pune's Thorale Bajirao Road, was the luxurious residence of Peshwa Bajirao II, the last Peshwa of Maratha confederacy, in the early 17th century. This is a three-storied mansion, known for its beautiful entrance and balcony with carved woodwork typical of the Peshwa period.
The Wada's eye-catching wooden facade is memorizing in its beauty, and has beautiful columns carved in the Suru form. On October 31,1880 a surprise fire engulfed the Wada ravaging the entire structure. Vishrambaug Wada was restored to its somewhat original appearance by public subscriptions and municipal contributions. For many years till 1958 it was to serve as the offices of the Poona Corporation. Today it houses assorted offices: a strange fate for what was once a king's abode.
The 20000 ft wada presently houses a post office in the ground floor, municipal offices and a small museum put together by noted historian Shivsahir Babasaheb Purandare. The carved woodwork of the balcony, its massive wooden pillars, and brown, white and terracotta façade is an amazing sight. Each pillar is carved from the trunk of a single teak tree.it still retains its large dancing hall and houses many artefacts, paintings, chandeliers, vases and other objects of the Peshwa dynasty. Two mythological figures called Vyal and Meghdambari are beautifully carved.
To all those who are big culture enthusiasts and who things of themselves as protectors of Pune’s culture, heritage, etc. I wish to ask one question; doesn’t the sad state of the historical site bother you? Grafitti on the walls, vendors using the place to store their stuff, and the Government doing nothing to change this is a saddening sight to watch. The wada’s restoration work under Heritage Corridor Plan has been undertaken and here’s hoping the great monument is restored and protected so that it lives on for future generations to witness the grandeur of Pune and the Peshwai Heritage.
Vishrambaug Wada wa built as a residence for Peshwa Baji Rao II in 1811, the last Peshwa leader and a prominent name was one of the reasons for 1857 Uprising against the Britsh. Located in Kumthekar Road in the heart of Pune, Sadashiv Peth, the wada is a grand heritage site.
