The Rohtang pass is 51 KM north of Manali and it is located on Manali Keylong Highway at an altitude of 4111 meters ( 13,400 ft ). This pass opens for tourist from April end to October end of the year. The permission to travel on this highway is given by Indian army after they clear the snow and inspect the road for its fitness and safety for movement of person and the vehicles. The same road connects to Leh Ladakh ( State of Jammu & Kashmir ) from Manali ( state of Himachal Pradesh). Sonepani Glacier and a small lake (Dashahr) are located opposite and left to Rohtang respectively. Beside the natural passes in the mountains at Rohtang, there are many other beautiful place enroute to Rohtang.
Rohtang Pass (3979 m) is 51kms. from Manali on highway to Keylong/Leh. It offers a panorama and spectacular mountain view. The pass is open from June to October each year although trekkers can cross it earlier. It is a gateway to Lahaul Spiti, Pangi and Leh valley just as Zojila pass is a gatway to Ladakh. There are a beautiful sight of glaciers, peaks and Chandra river flows down in the Lahaul valley. Slightly to the left are the twin peaks of the Geypan. During summer(mid June to October) regular buses ply between Manali-Keylong/Darcha, Udaipur, Spiti and Leh.
This is one of the few regions in the country where snow can be found even during summers (depending on weather conditions). Rohtang Pass is the 'Highest Jeepable Road in the World' and offers spectacular views of the Himalayas. Located on the Manali Keylong Highway, one needs a permit to travel on Rohtang pass from the Indian Army, ensuring safety as well as movement of vehicles.
Vehicles can be booked for a journey to Rohtang or one can also opt for shared taxis. Make sure to leave in the early morning for Rohtang so as to get right up to the Snow point.
