Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary is located near Mandalpatty in northern parts of Kodagu (Coorg) District. Pushpagiri was declared as a wildlife sanctuary on 2nd September 1987. Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over 102 sq km. Situated in the Western Ghats, Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary has thick evergreen and semi-evergreen forests and the shola grassland habitat in the higher areas.
The Pushpagiri wild life sanctuary is a very attractive range and home to rare and endangered birdlife and is considered as one of the important bird areas of the world. Indian Wild Dog, Civet, Indian Giant Squirrel, Spotted Deer, Sambar, Gaur, Asian Elephant, Boars, Giant Flying Squirrel, Stripe-necked mongoose and mouse deer are some of the animal species found here and the sanctuary has been proposed as a World Heritage Site.
The sanctuary is one of the largest areas of tropical evergreen forests in Karnataka with nearly 70% of the sanctuary covered with forests. Pushpagiri has dense evergreen and semi-evergreen vegetation, with shola forests and grasslands in areas of higher elevation.
