Panamik is a beautiful scenic village lying in the Nubra Valley of Jammu & Kashmir. It is the last village located at the frontiers of India before the Tibetan territory. The snow clad peaks and lush green trees surrounding Panamik, is a treat to the eye. Situated at an altitude of 3183 meters, Panamik is renowned for its hot sulphur springs which are claimed to have curative powers.
The hot water springs are located on the outskirts of the village, though not very far, only an uphill walk to reach the spot. The thick steam of vapour floating over the water adds up to the enigmatic atmosphere of this place. It is said that the temperature of water at the source, where the water bubbles out, is close to boiling – too hot to touch, or even to get close to. Although it’s not everyone’s cup of tea to take a dip in the hot waters of the spring, still some do, owing to the belief that it has healing powers.
The rocks around are toxic due to the presence of sulphur, and slippery as they are covered with algae, so watch your step and be careful! The Nubra River running along Panamik is a favourite site for picnicking. One can also go trekking at Panamik. So, do not forget to stopover at Panamik when in Nubra Valley.
The best time to visit Panamik and Nubra Valley is during autumn between the months of July and September, when the weather is cool and crisp.
