Perched perilously on the crag behind Leh palace and overlooking the town of Leh, Namgyal Tsemo Gompa temple was built by King Tashi Namgyal in 1430. This temple houses a three-story high solid gold statue of Maitrieya Buddha (future Buddha), a rich collection of Buddhist art and frescoes. Tourist can take a glimpse of a fort above the gompa which is in a form of ruins, but the view of Leh from there is magnificent. It is generally opens for the visitors during the morning for morning prayers. There is also an idol of Avaloketesvara and Manjushri, around one story high inside the location. The monastery offers amazingly stunning views of the town of Leh. Apart from these attractions, tourists can also visit a number of associated temples near by the Gompa, which remain open only during morning and evening.
The Namgyal Tsemo Gompa was founded by King Tashi Namgyal and has been named after him. It is a rich compilation of some ancient manuscripts and wall paintings
One of the most cherished belongings of the monastery is a three-storey high solid gold idol of Maitrieya Buddha.
The monastery also houses a statue of Avaloketesvara and Manjushri, approximately one storey high.
Near the monastery is an old fort, which, because of the ignorance, lies mostly in ruins now.
The splendid view from the top is worth viewing and alone is well worth for a tourist.
Bike or a car is a convenient option to reach the Gompa, also one can make a decent trek from Leh market.
