Jama Masjid was established in 1656 AD under the supervision of Saadullah Khan – Prime Minster of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. With marble and red stand stone Jama Masjid was constructed by around 5000 artisans in Delhi.
Also known as the Masjid-i-Jahan-Numa, Jama Masjid houses two minarets, four towers and three entrances. Jama Masjid tower houses five storeys out of which the first three are of red sand stone, fourth is of marble and the last one was built with marble.
The marble domes and arches are the prime attractions of the prayer hall of Jama Masjid. Also, the calligraphic inscriptions from Koran can be seen on the walls of Jama Masjid in Delhi. The northern entrance of Jama Masjid is quite unique as it possesses a red beard-hair of Muhammad, deer skin containing sermons of Koran and sandals and footprint of the great prophet.
The elegantly decorated interior chambers and the entire embellishment of Jama Masjid reminds the viewers of the rich taste of its founder – Shah Jahan. Located just in front of the famous Lal Quila Jama Masjid is today one of the Delhi World Heritage Sites.
Being known as the largest mosque of India Jama Masjid is a magnificent treasure of the country.
