Mutiny Memorial, New Delhi, Delhi India

The Mutiny Memorial lies within the proximity of Kashmiri Gate and is located on Rani Jhansi Road approximately 500 mts south of Hindu Rao Hospital on the Northern Ridge in Civil Lines area in Old Delhi.

Mutiny Memorial Tower was erected in 1863 and made is of red sandstone designed in the shape of an octagon with a circular shaped interior constructed in Gothic Style by the British. This Memorial site was built in memory of dedication and loyalty of all the Native Indian Soldiers and British Soldiers and Officers of the Delhi Field Force who serviced the British Military whilst still under their rule and fought in the battle of the 'Great Rebellion' also known as the Mutiny of Sepoys between 30th May 1857 and 20th September 1857 who either succumbed to the injuries from the Mutiny war of Independence of India or a few who died out of diseases during the aforementioned period and hence the name was derived to honour of these martyred Soldiers.

This Mutiny Memorial Tower is very close to Ashoka Pillar that lies about 200 mts away and is erected on a two-tiered base with ornamental designs and steps leading up to this Tower. It is surrounded by various placards on the walls engraved with names and ranks of the Soldiers who died fighting for the British Army against their 'enemy' during the 1857 Great Uprising. There is also a mention of these Soldiers fighting bravely and forcefully against their enemies and in order to clarify this sentence, another placard was erected on the day of the 25th Anniversary in 1972 confirming that 'the enemy' as mentioned in this statement by the British were in fact the Indian Freedom Fighters who rebelled against the British Rule in India and hence bravely fought their first War in 1857 for an Independent India for their country and were martyred.

The Mutiny Memorial is a monument in New Delhi. Also known as Ajitgarh, it was built in memory of British soldiers killed during First War of Indian Independence (Sepoy Mutiny) in 1857. Its architecture is Gothic with an octagonal perimeter. This octagonal tapering tower of red sandstone is now known as Ajitgarh and is situated just 200 meters away from the Ashoka Pillar. The architecture of the tower shows a typically Gothic influence and, while the tower is of an octagonal shape from the outside, it is circular from within and is raised on a base that is two-tiered. It has an ornamental façade with a staircase leading to the top. All around the tower there are many plaques on the walls mentioning the names and ranks of the soldiers who fought for the British in the War of 1857.

The Mutiny Memorial can be visited by all between 1000 hours and 1700 hours and entry is free for all tourists and visitors. Kashmiri Gate is a very popular site in Delhi and can be easily accessible by local taxis, buses, auto rickshaws and Metro Rail with Kashmiri Gate Metro Station as the nearest Metro link.
