Chelavara falls, Coorg, Karnataka India

Chelavara falls is located about 12 kms from Kakabbe, after a little diversion from Virajpet road. Height wise this is taller than Abbey falls and while tourists are not allowed to go under the falls there in Abbey, Cheluvara falls is unrestricted.

The best part of visiting Chelavara falls is that ‘Chomakund’ a renowned hill is just 2 kms away from here. Chomakund is an awesome place surrounding with lush green shrubs and trees and is almost covered in fog most of the time. One can also get a glance of the Arabian Sea from here.

The Chelavara falls has to be reached through a winding journey through the hills and the journey to the base of the Chomakund hills from here doesn’t get any easier. If you on a very relaxed mood and have the time, patience and energy you can afford to park your vehicle at the site of the waterfalls and walk  from thereon. There were no shops around, no mobile network range, no cacophony of  vehicle horns, no pollution,  not many localites let alone tourists and for a moment we were wondering if we were at the right place.

The hills were relatively clear of woods and there were only some cattle around and scenary told us why Coorg has been nicknamed as the Scotland of India. However, the scenic beauty at the top of hills more than made up for the efforts.
