Due to the influence of Muslim rule, Dindigul is known for famous Mosques. Begabur Big Mosques is famous one. During the rule of Hyder Ali, he constructed a few Mosques. One is constructed south of the Rock Fort for public. The younger sister of Hyder Ali Bahadur was buried in the Begambur Masque compound and a tomb was constructed on it. In memory of the Royal lady, this part is known as Begambur.
Begambur Big Mosque is more than 300 years old and was constructed during the reign of Hyder Ali. The mosque compound was also used for burying Ammer-un-Nisha Begum, the younger sister of Hyder Ali in Hijri 1187 or 1766 AD. This mosque was named after the royal lady who was known as Begambur in Dindigul.
