Vijaynagara Fort in Thanjavur is one of the popular historic monuments in India. The fort was built in early 1550.
Vijaynagara Fort is located at a distance of two kilometers from the North Eastern part of Brihadeshwar temple or the Big Temple (Boro Mandir). One of the Nayak kings, Vijay Raghav constructed a part of Vijaynagara Fort and later it was completed by the Maratha rulers in the early phase of 16th Century.
Vijaynagara Fort encloses of the Thanjavur Palace, Sangeetha Mahal, Serfoji I`s Goddess Saraswati Mahal Library, Art Gallery and Lord Shiva Ganga Garden. Inside the Vijayanagar Fort, there are several collections of art and sculpture and paintings.The Lord Shiva Ganga garden is located inside the fort. Some part of the Vijayanagar Fort is opened for the tourists who come to visit the place. Most part of the fort is ruined now.
