The Akshardham Temple in Delhi came up under the blessings of the great Pramukh Swami Maharaj. The Temple was opened for its devotees and visitors on 6th November, 2005. The Temple is built with Yamuna River flowing as its background. The main monument rests at the centre of the huge complex. This beautiful Akshardham temple in Delhi was built, as per the rules and guidance set by the Pancharatra Shastra and the Vastu Shastra.
Akshardham temple built on the banks of Yamuna River was a dream of Yogiji Maharaj of Swaminarayan Sanstha. He had expressed this wish of his to few of his devotees. The monument was planned in 1968 itself. But Swami Ji could not live to see his dream come true. This temple was constructed by one of his disciples, Pramukh Swami Maharaj, after 18 years of wait and struggle for approval of land near the Yamuna River.
The Akshardham Temple in Delhi is a splendid work of Indian architecture. The main temple at the centre of the complex is decorated with dancers, musicians, deities and flora and fauna. The Temple is built in Carrara marble and has Rajasthani pink tinge all over it, due to the pink sandstones.
The main monument has the Gajendra Pith which serves as its base. The central dome of the temple shelters the idol of Swaminarayan God. This idol is about 11 feet tall. The main idol is surrounded by other idols too. These idols are unique as they are made of Panch Dhatu or five metals.
Akshardham Temple in Delhi is an attraction in itself. But apart from being a religious centre, it also imparts knowledge on various cultures of India. The Temple has several internal attractions which are sure to surprise you with its various contents.
