Achanakmar Tiger Reserve is situated in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh, at north west between he Maikal Ranges of Satpura hills. The longitude is between 22 224 to 22 35 North and 81 85 East. It was declared as wildlife sanctuary on Dt. 10.02.1975 and Tiger Reserve in Feb 2009 enclosing an area of 553.286 Sq. km. with altitudes ranging from 200 m to 1,000 m above sea level.
The sanctuary is 55 km (34 mi) away from Bilaspur and is closed during the monsoon season. Trips to the sanctuary can be organized via private taxi operators. A place to stay is the Panther Cottage, Malhaar where there is a beautiful stone carved historical temple ruin.
It is set in the beautiful sal forests of the Malkal Hills. Tiger, leopard, bison, spotted deer, blue bull, sloth bear, python, gaur, chital, wild bear, striped hyena, jackal, Indian wild dog, sambar, four-horned antelope and chinkara are the common fauna found in the sanctuary.
