Velankanni was one of those areas that were badly hurt by tsunami- Aazhip Peralai that hit the Indian Ocean on 26th December, 2004. The devastating tsunami washed away people near the beach and the bus stand area. As many as thousand pilgrims died and had been buried together in a single grave just about 4 kilometers from the church.
